Question: I Have a Garmin dc30 collar and when i turn it on the red light stays on and doesn’t flash what does that mean?

This can happen to All the DC20, DC30 and DC40 collars.

Generally this means it’s in Data Transfer Mode or the Software has not been installed correctly. One of the Biggest Benefit’s that I see with the new Garmin 320 Astro is the ability to fix this Solid Red Light issues.

When Updating with a 220 you Plug in the Garmin to your computer and go to your collar that you want to update and Select Update collar. It normally goes into a state that says it’s ready to update. Then on your computer You would run the Garmin Web Updater to update the collar.

When the Solid Red light is on you can not communicate to the collar to “re-install’ the software.

However with the Garmin Astro 320 you will be able to “Re-Install” the software on a collar.

If you don’t have the Dog programed into the 320 before you had the Red Light issue, you can try a different way of forcing an Update.

Here is how. Delete all the dogs from your dog list.
Add a dog to your 320 astro manually. (doesn’t really matter which Id number you select)
Now Make sure there are no other Collars on, and Update the software for the dog you just added, and the 320 should update the first dog Collar it connects to.

Another Trick someone asked me along these same lines is He wanted to save GPS coordinates and Locations that you are not physically at.

This one took me a while to figure out But the question was how to input in GPS coordinates. But Let’s Say your friend looses his dogs or get’s Hurt and needs help and he can make a phone call, How does he tell you where his Exact location is? He calls you and gives you his GPS location.

Something like,

N 46 55.893
W 133 14.558

If it’s serious I would Call 911 and search and rescue would make it out to that location easily. But if it’s a Dead battery car problems or something that isn’t life or death, 911 might not be the best choice over your Hunting Partner.

It’s a real Pain to enter them into the Garmin Astro since there isn’t a way to just make a waypoint from GPS coordinates like this.

Here’s how I do it.

Hit Mark to mark your location, But before you hit save, you can scroll down and Change the Name But Also you can change the GPS coordinates before saving it.

When you have it right You Save it it will save the GPS coordinates that you entered.

Probably not very useful except in Emergency Situations,

I’ve taken my Father Off the mountain twice from a Heart attack, and been able to call in Help from a Broken down Truck in the mountains by giving coordinates. So it’s helped save my hide several times.

These little Tricks are Nice to have in your back pocket.

Here is how to Mark a Location other than your location. For example You might want to mark the Tree before you get to it encase your dogs leave the tree. Most of the time If you are like myself You want to Scroll over and Hit the Mark Button, However that will just Mark Your current Location and not the location that your cursor is.

Here are the instructions To mark a location where your cursor is on your Astro 220.

Press map

Scroll the cursor over to the location you want to mark.

Press (ENTER) instead of pressing Mark.

If you press Mark it will mark your current location..

After you press enter.

It will either Select something that you’ve scrolled over and you should be able to save that as a Location, (Hint: you can change the name to what ever you want before you save it.)

Or if it doesn’t select something it will say “no Map info at this point. Do You want to Mark a location here”

I know it’s pretty confusing and counter intuitive, But that’s how you can mark a location where you are not at.

“We are delighted to have Tri-Tronics join the Garmin family. Like Garmin, Tri-Tronics is a leading and respected brand that is committed to designing, manufacturing, and marketing the highest quality, most rugged, and easiest-to-use devices in the business,” said Cliff Pemble, president and COO of Garmin. “By integrating the two companies, we believe we can leverage our areas of expertise into products that can greatly enhance the way that dog owners interact with their canine companions. This acquisition should demonstrate without a doubt that Garmin is fully committed to developing innovative products for the canine market.”

“For more than 40 years, Tri-Tronics has been the leading brand of electronic dog training equipment. Combined with Garmin, we can extend our leadership well into the future,” said Mike Romano, vice president and general manager of Tri-Tronics. “Our combined team will work together to develop cutting-edge products that will help dog owners more effectively train their dogs and keep them safer. Together, we can bring these products to market quicker, with more features, and at a competitive price.”

Innovation has made both Garmin and Tri-Tronics the choice of elite dog trainers and breeders as well as amateur hunters and pet owners. Garmin revolutionized the sporting dog market when it entered the market in 2007 with Astro®, its highly-successful GPS dog tracking system, which pinpoints the exact location of a dog for hunters. Earlier this year, Garmin introduced the cellular-based GTU 10 GPS locator and web-based Garmin Tracker™ service for computers and smartphones.

For more than 40 years, Tri-Tronics has pioneered many innovative and patented features on e-collars and bark limiters, including innovations in wireless signal transmission, variable stimulation, battery technology, and numerous features that ensure dogs are safe when trained with an e-collar. This consistent leadership in the industry has made Tri-Tronics one of the most trusted names in dog training.

Tri-Tronics will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Garmin Ltd. Its existing management team will be retained and will continue operations at its headquarters in Tucson, Arizona. Financial terms of the agreement will not be released. The deal is expected to close by June 30, 2011.

Garmin® Introduces Next-Generation Astro® 320 Dog Tracker

Posted June 2, 2011 | 06:00 AM in

Industry-Leading Map Capability, Increased Range, Enhanced Features

OLATHE, Kansas/June 2, 2011/Business Wire/ – Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today the Astro 320, a new handheld dog tracking receiver. The new Astro 320 has features that hunters have been asking for – like increased range, a simplified user interface, and must-have mapping capability.

“Garmin is clearly the expert when it comes to reliable GPS technology, and we’re the pioneer in satellite dog tracking,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “Since the original Astro was delivered, we’ve listened closely to feedback from houndsmen and bird dog owners. The Astro 320 is the result of that feedback.”

Thanks to an included redesigned antenna, the maximum range between the Astro 320 and a Garmin tracking collar has been increased by nearly 30 percent – up to nine miles in flat, unobstructed terrain. Like its predecessor, the Astro 320 can track up to ten dogs per receiver at once, and the unit is fully compatible with Garmin’s DC 20, DC 30, and DC 40 dog tracking collars and accessories.

Robust mapping capability has always been a hallmark of the Astro line, and the new Astro 320 delivers even more highly detailed, full color, sunlight readable mapping capabilities. In addition to the pre-installed basemap, the Astro can be loaded with 100k or 24k Topo maps or photorealistic BirdsEye™ Satellite Imagery ($29.99 annual subscription required). The Astro 320 has 1.7 gigabytes of on-board memory available for loading maps, and a microSD slot for pre-loaded cards.

Mapping depicts important nearby geographical features – and lets hunters know, for example, if their dog has crossed a creek or is nearing a dangerous road. With BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, hunters can pinpoint buildings, powerlines, and even individual trees – directly on their Astro 320. State wildlife departments are also offering more and more downloadable third-party maps of public hunting boundaries, which help ensure dogs and their owners are on legal ground. Hunters and trainers can also download, view and save their dog’s tracks to a computer for viewing in Garmin’s BaseCamp utility – a great tool for evaluating performance.

All these features are integrated into a refined user interface for easier and more useful operation. Not only does the Astro 320 indicate a dog’s distance and status, (running, pointing, or treeing) but it can be toggled to indicate the direction the dog is moving on the unit’s map page. Each dog’s precise distance can also be presented on the map page, and users can choose an option that auto zooms the map so all dogs can be seen on the display at any time. Alternately, dogs that are too far away to fit on the map’s current zoom scale can be notated on the display’s margin in the direction of the dog’s location. The user can also choose the duration that each dog’s tracklog is viewed on the display – or toggle it off completely for a cleaner display. Taken together, these refinements give dog handlers more data that is more easily understood – making their hunt or training session safer, more productive, and more enjoyable.

A new three-axis electronic compass lets hunters accurately view their dog’s position when holding the Astro 320 at any angle. In addition to audible alerts, Garmin has also incorporated a new vibration feature on the Astro 320, and the new handheld also features a handy keypad lock so buttons aren’t accidentally pushed while being carried in a pocket or through thick brush. Dog handlers can wirelessly transfer waypoints, tracks, and even their dog’s tracking settings to other Astro 320 users. The new Astro 320 is fully waterproof and runs on two AA batteries for up to 20 hours.

For current Astro users looking to upgrade, the Astro 320 handheld unit has an MSRP of $499.99. A complete system, which includes an Astro 320 and one DC 40 tracking collar and accessories, will be available for $649.99 (MSRP). The Astro 320 is expected to be available in July 2011. For more information, please visit http://sites.garmin.com/astro.

Garmin has spent more than 20 years developing technologies and innovations to enhance users’ lives, making the company a household name in the automotive, aviation, marine, wireless, outdoor and fitness industries.
By popular demand we have created a new and more durable Tuff DC30 Antenna. Many people have asked us about the Tuff Skin Antenna’s and we decided to build one that was Double Tuff, with Double the Warranty of the Other Tuff Skin DC30 antennas.

I think you’ll find Double Tuff design has a few features that they other don’t, a no question asked 2 year warranty to start, and Orange cover for visibility.

It’s been measured and Tested for SWR to make sure that it matches the Stock DC30 antenna. We have found it to have a Lower SWR than the stock antennas which means that more signal power get’s out into the air over the stock antenna.
